Amherst Co., VA - The families of both Jennifer Johnson and Cordell Carter still haven't given in to reality.
"I'm kind of hurt, and I'm numb, because I don't want to believe," said Cordell Carter's Brother, Cordie Carter.
The thought of Carter allegedly shooting Johnson in her home with her children present, is too much to take.
"Not in my wildest dream would I have ever imagined this," said Jennifer Johnson's Grandmother Ann Harper.
"Me knowing my brother, I don't think he would do something like this," Carter said of his brother Cordell. "He always cared for people. [He] always tried to look out for people."
"She was a good girl. She was a good mother, she was a hard worker," Ann Harper remembered.
"Jennifer was an amazing person that really tried hard every day to better herself and make everyone else around her brighter and make everyone else's life better," explained John Wolhfert, Jennifer Johnson's Cousin.
Both Johnson and Carter are described fondly by their families, but their relationship together, and the custody fights over their son, are not.
"They got a bumpy relationship. Like I said it was about the child. You know, that's basically what it was," recalled Cordie Carter.
"[They were fussing and fighting and getting together and getting over it," added Ann Harper.
"Jennifer was protective over their relationship and Cordell wasn't part of our family and wasn't involved in our family. So that part of Jennifer was separate," Wolhfert said.
It was a relationship apparently riddled with fights, that ended in violence.
"I don't want to believe that. I don't want to believe that. I still don't want to believe it," Cordie Carter said of his accused brother.
"The realities of what the world's going to look like without her hasn't really sunk in yet," Wolhfert added.
Johnson's cousin says she was beginning a new chapter in her life, only months away from graduating with a business degree from Liberty University.
Carter's brother says he is a hard-working man and a devoted father. He says if the charges are true, he's not sure what would have driven his brother to such an act.
