Charlotte Co., VA - The Charlotte County Sheriff's office says a 3-year-old boy was inside the home last night when his father was gunned down.
The victim's family remembered Alphonso Watson Jr. as a great guy but as an even better father.
Investigators say he died Thursday night after finding his on again off again girlfriend with another man.
Kamari Watson looks just like his father. Now all friends and family of Alphonso Watson have left are pictures and fond memories.
"Always got a smile on his face, the biggest smile ever," said Shameka Pettes, a friend of Watson Jr.
Investigators say Kamari was inside a home on Roseland Road when his father was shot in the back of the neck by his mother's boyfriend.
"The victim was bent over and the suspect had fired at him, fired one shot," said Captain Howard Hobgood with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say Akim Simmons, 31, turned himself in about an hour and a half later. Word spread quickly through the small town of Wylliesburg. "Shocked, mad, my 3-year-old cousin is gonna grow up without a father," said Pettes.
"The people, the victims, the victim's family's, everybody suffers," said Wendy Watson, Watson Jr.'s sister.
Watson is still coming to terms with the way her younger brother and Kamari's father was taken.
"I love you. And I know you're in a better place. I wasn't ready for you to leave yet," said Watson.
The Watsons are waiting to get Alphonso's body back from the medical examiner's office to set a day for his funeral.
Simmons is at the Charlotte County jail where he's charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
