Expansion Groundbreaking For Western Forensic Laboratory

Roanoke Co., VA - The criminal forensics lab that serves the western area of Virginia is expanding.The Western Forensic Laboratory will nearly double in size once the project is finished.Demolition of the old Roanoke County Police Department, where the extension will be built, started in February.Monday state officials gathered for the groundbreaking of the construction phase.Once finished the new lab will be able to better take on the increasing workload that is sometimes sent to other labs."As we are allowed to expand here with that additional space that will cut down on the amount time that it takes to do a case because it doesn't have to be transferred to another lab," said Director of the Department of Forensic Science, Linda Jackson.The building is shared with the Chief Medical Examiner as well.The Western region covers from Danville to Charlottesville and west.
