Emergency Road Built to Reach Stranded Bedford Co. Neighbors

Bedford Co., VA - Bedford County rescue officials build an access road to a private community in Blue Ridge, where nine families have been stranded since flood waters washed out their private road Wednesday night.

"If there were a fire, we would not be able to put a fire truck out there," said Chief Jack Jones, Jr., with Bedford County Fire and Rescue.

Jones personally visited Meadowlark Road to assess the situation.

"There was some work this weekend to put a road in through that aggressive terrain, " said Jones. "What would be an emergency services road or we call them a fire trail. Something you're not going to drive on every day but it is a method to get emergency vehicles in and out."

Jones says his department has made arrangements with Carilion Clinic to land a helicopter in the neighborhood if there is an extreme medical emergency.
