Dominion Will Move Forward with Proposed Natural Gas Pipeline

Nelson County, VA -{}Dominion Energy has decided to move forward with a 550-mile natural gas pipeline --- that is expected to go through Nelson County. The company announced today they have formed a joint venture with Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas, and A-G-L Resources on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline --- formerly known as the Southeast Reliability project. "They have said there are 225 parcels affected in the county. But they won't tell the county which parcels are affected right now" These days it's hard to pass through Nelson County without seeing a 'No Pipeline' sign. "They have said there are 225 parcels affected in the county. But They won't tell the county which parcels are affected right now" Much to these homeowners' disappointment, the energy giant Dominion has decided to move forward with the 550-mile pipeline. "This pipeline, which is one of the largest that has ever been built in decades, will provide Virginia with an energy super highway" said Governor Terry McAuliffe. Governor Terry McAuliffe says the Atlantic Coast pipeline project will bring thousands of construction jobs to the state. He says construction alone will generate around 1.4 billion dollars in economic activity.{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{} "This project will also allow Virginia to recruit new heavy manufacturing to our state" said McAuliffe. However pipeline opposition group Friends of Nelson say those jobs will be filled by experienced professionals and not local workers. Craig Cooper is with the Rockfish Valley foundation. The nonprofit has not taken a stance on the issue, but he says they are concerned the pipeline will impact the water quality of local streams and rivers. "If you do anything which risks the quality of that watershed you throw a huge question mark at the tourism industry." The Atlantic Coast Pipeline still needs to obtain approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. If approved, Dominion says they plan to begin construction in 2016.
