Lynchburg, VA - Dearington Elementary students who created a gingerbread train for a national contest were selected as one of the top 10 in the ages 9 to 12 category.
Dearington was up against 68 other teams. The fourth graders entered the train display in the 20th National Gingerbread House Competition and Display.
The judges said they were impressed with the accuracy of the fit and the use of the different materials. The project was a great hands-on lesson for the kids too.
"The joy of math and how to use math as a tool instead of thinking of it as a subject in school, and that math is everywhere in their lives," said Carrie Lewis, a math resource and STEM teacher.
The house is on display at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina through January.
