Danville, VA -- Zumba has made its way to the Southside. Not only is it getting hundreds of people in shape, it's also helping the community. The Latin dance craze Zumba brings in hundreds of people to Jackie Rhone's Redeemed Zumba Fitness class six days a week.
"Every night, it seems like new people are coming and they are getting excited about it," said Rhone.
Rhone credits Zumba for helping her drop 60 pounds and taking weight off dozens of others.
"When you feel good about yourself, you are ready to tackle anything that comes your way," said Rhone.
But the workout isn't the main reason countless people keep coming back. They do it for the people that can't make it to class, like Damaris Seay. Last year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"All I could think was well taking one day at a time and hoping and praying that I would get through it," said Seay.
With treatment came big bills, and that's where Redeemed Fitness comes in. At a cost of only $2 per class, 20% of the proceeds go to a different charity each month. Last month, they could pay for seven cancer patients to get wigs, including Seay.
"It was like a load taken off," said Seay.
So that's become their ministry.
"I think it is just incredible to be able to pay it forward in that way," said Rhone.
During each work out, they think about what weight they can lift off of others. This month, they are helping the Burn Fund. But Saturday, they are doing a special Zumba session. It will be a 3 hour Zumbathon in Martinsville at 117 Broad Street. All of the proceeds are going to help women with cancer get wigs.
The Zumbathon will cost $5, and it's from 5 p.m. - 8pm. If you want more information contact Ella Wickham at (276)732-1701.
