Danville Unveils 50,000 Pound Weight Loss Challenge at Trailhead Ceremony

Danville, VA - Spring has sprung in the city of Danville, and that means it's time to get fit.

Get Fit Dan River Region, a group focused on community health and wellness, saw a creative idea and turned it into the biggest weight loss challenge this community has ever seen.
"The Oklahoma City Mayor put his city on a diet a few years ago and they lost one million pounds, and we thought, if they can do it, we've got enough spirit in the Dan River Region that we could do it too," said Program Director Stephanie Ferrugia.
Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller is also a cardiologist. He tells his patients that best medicine for a long, healthy life is exercise.
"This is a major player in preventing heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke - better than any medicine I could give somebody, " Miller said.
Over the next 90 days, residents are encouraged to take the pledge on the Get Fit website.
Familiar names like radio news personality Chuck Vipperman will lead the way as team leaders, sharing their own weight loss journeys through workout videos posted online.
"Personally, I'd like to adopt healthier habits but, if what little bit I do helps this region in anyway, I'm all for it, " said Vipperman.
Vipperman says getting in shape will be a plus, but the real goal is to see a change in the health of our community.
"It's something you don't think about but a healthier community has a much greater chance of being a happier community, " Vipperman said.
