Danville, VA-- It's been in the works for a couple of months now, and Thursday night Danville officially launched it's new group that works to promote diversity.
Danville United had their kick-off meeting at the Institute for Advanced Learning.
The special guest speaker was Jim Rotch who is an attorney from Alabama. He talked about his grassroots efforts in Birmingham to eliminate racism and prejudice with a statement called the Birmingham Pledge.
Attendees had asked questions and talked about how race relations can be improved in Danville.
"We're becoming more diverse everyday," said Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders. "We all know that we should respect everybody, but some people have not had that experience, or feel they don't have the need to. Well yes you do, it is now and the future."
During the meeting Mayor Saunders recognized Bishop Lawrence for his dedication to racial equality and for being pioneer of Danville United.
