Danville, VA - The Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center has won $50,000.The Danville Regional Foundation presented the organization with the big check. The money was given for outstanding community service as part of DRF's annual Ashby Award.
The Food Center has been operation for 17 years now, and just last year they distributed more than 100,000 pounds of food to around 6,000 people.
This donation will be used to buy more food and renovate a warehouse for the group.
"We've owned the building now for 15 months. We've been slowly getting it ready for use but there's been a lot of things such as putting the handicapped bathroom in, knocking walls down and putting doors so people can get in," said Rev. Michael Pugh, President of the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center.
Past winners of the Ashby Award include the Danville Life Saving Crew and God's Pit Crew.
