Danville, VA-- Saturday was National Prescription Drug Take back Day, and people on the Southside had several locations to drop off their unwanted medication.
Danville Police set up their collection site at a Walgreens Pharmacy. They collected around 200 pounds of pills.
Danville police said improperly disposing pills can be very dangerous. They said not to flush them down the toilet or throw them in the trash, but to take advantage of events like this one.
"Offering the public a chance to do take backs like this, kind of gets it out of their hands and gets it off the street," said Corporal Timothy Scearce, Crime Prevention Officer with the Danville Police Department. " In a sense it reduces the opportunity that this stuff can be abused because we're taking out of play."
Police said if you missed today's event, you can properly dispose of your pills by putting them in used cat litter or coffee grounds, placing them inside a container, and then throwing them away.
