Danville, VA - The keynote speaker at this year's NAACP Freedom Banquet isn't sitting well with some people.
The Danville chapter of the NAACP has invited Reverend Jeremiah Wright to be the speaker..
He's President Obama's former pastor who gained notoriety during the 2008 presidential election for statements he made on race and government.Wright led Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for more than 30 years.
Now, he makes the rounds as an influential speaker across the country.
The Danville NAACP chapter says they are glad to welcome Wright, and he was chosen based on his work as a minister and humanitarian.
Chapter President Greg Hairston says they did not consider any of his past controversy.
He says they just saw him as a dynamic speaker that will hopefully draw a large crowd to the annual fundraiser.
"We don't assume he is going to come here and talk about anything involving controversy. We assume he'll come here and inspire our membership and inspire our community to do great things, " Hairston said.
That banquet is April 14th at 6 PM in Ringgold. Tickets are $40 each.
