Danville Man Charged With DUI, Other Charges, Following Police Chase

Danville, VA - A Danville man is in the hospital and under police guard following a vehicle chase and resulting crash early Monday morning.

Police say shortly after 2:30 a.m., a Danville Police Officer attempted to stop a 2006 Mazda on Betts St. The Officer suspected that the driver had several outstanding warrants.

The driver, Charles Edward Gary, age 55, disregarded the officer's signal to stop, and the chase was ended by the officer, officials said.

Police said the Mazda then crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Betts Street and Slade Street. Gary was not at the scene of the crash when the officer arrived there.

A short time later, Gary was taken into custody by another officer running on foot in the 700 block of South Main Street.

Gary complained of injury and was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center where he continues to receive treatment, police said.

Gary has been charged with DUI, Eluding Police, and Driving with a Suspended License.

In addition, Gary will be served with the following papers once he's released from the hospital: Probation Violation out of Alamance County, NC, Failure to Appear out of Halifax County, VA, and a Bench Warrant, Failure to Appear out of Franklin County, PA.
