Danville, VA - Fire officials suggest you change smoke detector batteries twice a year, usually when you change the clocks this weekend.Officials say it's really important to make sure your smoke detectors are working as winter approaches. The Danville Fire Department says more fires happen in the winter than any other time of year.
"Smoke detectors are about like having a fire department live with you at all times. It's there to protect you but they must be maintained," said Shelby Irving, Fire Marshal.
Fire officials also remind everyone to check your carbon monoxide detectors as well.
