Danville, VA - Danville residents may have to pay higher bus fares because of a decrease in the city's population.
The 2010 census showed the population has dropped below 50,000.
City transportation director Marc Adelman says that means Danville is no longer eligible for state and federal grants that used to cover 90% of the costs.
The transit system is now considered a rural system, and the city is only eligible for grants that will cover only 65% of the same costs. The transit system now faces a $16,000 deficit going into the new budget year July 1.
Adelman is proposing increasing regular bus fares from $1 to $1.10. City Council will vote on the proposal June 18.
