Lynchburg, VA - A busy morning at a Lynchburg cemetery Monday, as crews worked to straighten an old tombstone.
The grave is located in the old Presbyterian cemetery on Grace Street. It is the final resting place of Sarah Carroll, the wife of John Carroll.
The family says the 136-year-old stone had started to lean about two months ago. John Carroll was a leading member of the community, who built a hotel on Church Street.
"Mr. Carroll, who has the larger monument just beyond this one, had the Lone Jack Tobacco Company...Lynchburg was a huge tobacco center...At one time it was the second wealthiest city in the country," said retired librarian Lynn Dodge.
"It means a lot, my family you know, keep it straight, clean, and clear," said family member Marion Barksdale.
Once the crane got the stone upright and crews finished some hammering, they put down concrete to keep the 1877 gravestone up straight.
