Update: 10:26 p.m. - Carroll Co., VA -
All lanes have been reopened in a series of crashes along Interstate 77 in Carroll County Tuesday.
The accidents killed two people, injured 16 and involved 75 vehicles.
The first crash happened just before noon and within minutes several others were reported.
State police are still in the process of notifying next of kin for the deceased individuals.
Heavy fog is believed to be the cause.
Carroll Co., VA - A deadly series of crashes has shut down Interstate 77 in the Fancy Gap area.
This first series of accidents happened around 11:40 this morning in the southbound lanes.
State Police say two people were killed and 20 injured, four critically. About 50 vehicles and four bigs rigs were involved.
Then around 5:00 p.m., there was another pileup in the northbound lanes involving at least two tractor trailers.
According to authorities, heavy fog in the area is likely to blame.

At 4:57 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to a crash with injuries in the northbound lanes of I-77 at the 7 mile marker in the Fancy Gap area of Carroll County. As troopers assess this latest crash, northbound traffic on I-77 is being stopped at Exit 1 - just inside the Virginia line. The northbound crash involves at least two tractor-trailers. Virginia State Police are coordinating with North Carolina law enforcement and transportation officials to coordinate this traffic situation.
As for the southbound I-77 crashes, here is an update with the latest figures. (The reason these numbers keep growing with updates is because I have been purposely conservative on my estimates, as I did not have any confirmation on the totals until now.) These are our final numbers...
The crashes in the southbound lanes of I-77 between the 3 and 7 mile markers involved approximately 50 vehicles, with half of those being commercial motor vehicles. A total of 20 people were injured, four of those being critical. There remain two confirmed fatalities.

Fog and darkness are now contributing factors/challenges to the situation as crews continue to clear the southbound lanes and respond/investigate/clear the northbound traffic crash. We're still looking at 9 p.m. as a time to re-open the southbound lanes of I-77 to thru traffic.
WYTHEVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say two people are dead and at least a dozen are injured following three multi-vehicle crashes on a foggy stretch of Interstate 77 in southwestern Virginia.
The southbound lanes are closed from Wytheville to the North Carolina border. Detours have been set up.
State Police say in a news release that heavy fog in the Fancy Gap area reduced visibility to zero.
The first accident was reported at 11:39 a.m. Two more crashes occurred minutes later.
State Police say at least six passenger vehicles and four tractor-trailers were involved in one accident. At least four passenger vehicles and two-tractors were involved in another crash.
The conditions of the injured weren't immediately available.
