Newsome resigned as superintendent at last Monday's school board meeting, citing personal and family reasons.
Bible Way Cathedral in Danville had Newsome as a special guest speaker on Sunday. The congregation recognized his accomplishment of being the first African-American superintendent in the city. Many leaders in the community were there including the mayor, some school board members and the president of the local NAACP.
Newsome said he has high hopes for Danville's students.
"My hope is that in a short period of time all children will have access to anytime anywhere learning and I would like that my legacy be about beginning that process," Newsome said.
Newsome said will be moving to Maryland within the next month.
