Community Rallies Around Madison Heights Family After Fire
Madison Heights, VA - The community is rallying around a Madison Heights family that lost nearly everything.
Fire officials say the fire started in their kitchen, destroying the mobile home on Oak Leaf Drive, and igniting four propane tanks around back.
A 19-year-old woman was sleeping inside the home when it caught fire Wednesday afternoon.
"I was asleep and I was woken up by neighbors yelling and the smell of smoke," Brittany Brown said, picking through the debris.
Two of the family's dogs would die, but Brown escaped by kicking out the air conditioning unit and jumping through her bedroom window.
What-ifs are still running through her mind.
"I think what if my mom and brother had been there, too," Brown said.
Heather King, a friend of the family, is organizing a yard sale, fundraiser, and asking for monetary donations to help them pick up the pieces.
"When my mom told me that Brittany had to kick out the air condition, it just sent chills down my body," King said, after hearing about the fire.
A yard sale is planned for this Saturday at 2 p.m. at 347 Kentmore Farm Road. Anyone who wants to help the family is asked to call (434) 420-2526.
