Charlotte - The Liberty Flames are picked to finish SECOND in the Big South Conference preseason football poll released Thursday.
Coastal Carolina is the preseason number one for the first time since 2006. Coastal got 9 first-place votes from head coaches and media members to 6 for the Flames. VMI tied for fifth in the voting with Presbyterian. This is VMI's last year in the Big South before moving back to the Southern Conference in 2014.Turner Gill, LIBERTY FLAMES HEAD COACH, said "Now in the second season, I think the biggest difference is now I think we have tremendous leadership. You've got to have great leadership and I think it all has to come from within the student athletes to be able to do things on a consistent basis. They have to be able to teach the things to the guys who don't understand it."
Sparky Woods, VMI KEYDETS HEAD COACH, said "I think there's certainly reason for optimism as we go into this because we return a lot of football players that played a lot for us there and I think the investment they've made and the attitude they show offers us encouragement and confidence."
