Lynchburg - The 20th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team outshot Centre College 14-1 in the first half, but allowed a goal late in the match to fall 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Tournament.
Lynchburg had multiple opportunities in the first half, keeping the ball on the Centre side of the field throughout the first 35 minutes.
Centre broke the scoreless drought with less than 14 minutes left. Julie Gates deflected a Chelsea Klein shot into the goal for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Centre turned away 16 Lynchburg penalty corners in the contest to capture the first NCAA victory in program history.
Lynchburg finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots and 16-5 in corners. But the Hornets' season ends at 16-and-5 while Centre moves on to face the nation's number 4 seed, Christopher Newport, this weekend in the round of 16.
