Cavaliers Lose to the Terrapins in All ACC Super Regional
Charlottesville, VA - In game one Saturday, the Cavaliers lost to the Terrapins in the first ever All-ACC super regional. In the bottom of the first inning, UVa had a chance to score big. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Downes hit a fly ball to the gap. Charlie White made an outstanding catch, but Mike Papi should have easily tagged and scored But he thought he left too early, went back to the base and that cost him. He was gunned down at home for an inning-ending double play. It remained 1-1. Nathan Kirby started for UVa. It was his shortest outing of the season; just 4 and 2 thirds. He gave up a season high 5 runs and 7 hits. Maryland took a 3-2 lead in the 4th on a squeeze bunt. Whit Mayberry came in in relief. He was actually drafted in the 21st round by the Tigers while was pitching. He allowed UVa to build a comeback by striking out 6 in 4 and a third innings. It was 5-2 in the 6th. Branden Cogswell drove in a run and then in the 8th Papi roped a single to score a run. It was 5-4. Papi was 3 for 3 with 2 walks. The Cavs had the tying run on 2nd and winning run on 1st in the 9th but Robbie Coman flied out to right to end it. UVa leaves14 men on base and falls 5 to 4.
