Football fans, your wait is over!
The pigskin is back! Football Friday regular season games kick in this Friday night. Among the big high school games are our Game of the Week choices for Friday night. You can vote for either Magna Vista at Heritage, Rustburg at William Campbell or Northside at Amherst County. I'll announce the Game of the Week winners each Thursday night during the season.
College openers are less than two weeks away. On Saturday, September 1, Virginia opens at home against Richmond, Liberty plays at Wake Forest and VMI plays at Delaware State. Then on Monday night, September 3rd, Virginia Tech opens at home against Georgia Tech in an ACC showdown the first game of the season. Blacksburg will be rockin' for that one!
Pro football is not far behind. The NFL has some great storylines this season, including Peyton Manning's return with a new team the Broncos, the beginning of the Robert Griffin the Third era in Washington and the Andrew Luck years in Indianapolis, and of course the Jets' quarterback battle with Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
We've got playoff baseball in Lynchburg in two weeks! The Hillcats locked up their playoff spot back in June winning the first half title.
Major League Baseball will be a lot of fun as well down the stretch. How about those Washington Nationals! We knew they'd be improved this year, but they've got the best record in baseball right now, some 30 games over
.500! I actually got a chance to see the Nationals in person Saturday night with my son Ryan, a Father's Day gift. Even though they suffered a rare loss to the Mets that night, these guys are for real and the Washington fans are giving them great support. They even had a free concert after the game with Third Eye Blind, not bad a baseball game and concert back-to-back. We had a great time!
And over in the American League, you gotta give a thumbs-up to the Orioles! It's late August and they're right in the thick of the pennant and wildcard races. Long-suffering Orioles fans finally have a team that's making plenty of noise, that's great for Baltimore fans and great for baseball!
