Carter's Call for July 27, 2011

OK, did anybody REALLY think the NFL season was in jeopardy? I sure didn't.

The players and owners have way too much to lose if there's no football! They sure dragged their feet, though, and took their precious time, four-and-a-half months, before FINALLY coming to an agreement. It was almost like they weren't really TRYING to settle this thing until they really had to, but they GOT 'R DONE. I'm sure glad they did, mostly for guys like Nelson County's Brian Saunders, who with the lockout lifted, now gets his shot to earn an NFL job. Saunders got the call from the Jacksonville Jaguars Tuesday morning and was on a plane to Florida that afternoon to complete a free agent deal and report to camp Wednesday.

Three Virginia Cavaliers also landed free agent deals Tuesday, including long snapper Danny Aiken out of Roanoke who signed with Buffalo. Receiver Dontrelle Inman heads to Jacksonville and defensive end Zane Parr gets his shot with the Houston Texans. We wish them all the best, along with former Boston College star Mark Herzlich who signed a deal with the New York Giants. Herzlich will have fans all over rooting for him, returning last year to Boston College after being diagnosed with bone cancer after his sophomore year.

Florida State is the ACC media's pick to win the league this year and unseat defending champion Virginia Tech. I'm sure Frank Beamer has no problem with handing over the bull's eye to the Seminoles, who last won the ACC title back in 2005. The Hokies are picked to win the Coastal Division with UVa projected fifth ahead of Duke.

Hard to believe high school football is right around the corner! We begin our Football Friday previews the first day of practice, Monday August 1st. We'll hit 30 teams in 25 days taking you right up to Opening Night of the season on Friday, August 26th. And we'll actually crank things up a week early with our Football Friday preview show on the 19th.

Lynchburg is hosting the American Legion State Baseball Tournament this week at Liberty University. If you have a chance, you'll see some quality baseball from the top legion teams from across the state.

Hope everybody's had a great summer and has been able to sneak in a vacation or at least a few days away. The Carters went to Hilton Head in South Carolina this year for the first time, we had a great time!

Take care, we'll see you real soon on Football Friday!
