Campbell County, VA - The Campbell County Sheriff's Office held a memorial wreath laying ceremony Thursday morning in honor of Deputy Jason Saunders.
Saunders died in the line of duty in 2007 when he lost control of his car during a chase. He joined the Altavista Fire Department at age 16, Campbell County Dispatch at age 18, and was a part of the Sheriff's Office by age 21. Saunders died at age 23.
His family says they have gained many other family members through the Sheriff's Office and Fire Department than they could have ever imagined -- and this annual memorial service means a lot.
"More than anything else it lets me know that he's not forgotten because that's been my worst fear since day one that people would forget who Jason was and what he stood for and it reiterates that that everyone is still thinking of him and that means the world to us," said Peggy Saunders, Jason's Mother.
Jason Saunders is the only officer the Sheriff's Office has a record of losing in the line of duty.
