Campbell Co., VA - Officials with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office are now calling the two suspicious deaths on Sleepy Hollow Road a double homicide.
They say John Victor Philbrook, 73, and his wife Virginia Ann Philbrook, 72, died of gunshot wounds.
Major L.T. Guthrie says John Philbrook used to be a police officer in the small town of Spring Lake, New Jersey. He and his wife had been living in their home on 186 Sleepy Hollow Road in Campbell County for more than 20 years.
Guthrie says the sheriff's office got a call around 9 a.m. Friday from someone that said they hadn't seen the couple in several days. Deputies later discovered the bodies inside the home.
Neighbors say John Philbrook always walked his three dogs around the neighborhood. They say his wife had several health issues and was in a wheelchair.
Charlie Shaeff and his family have lived in the neighborhood for decades and knew the Philbrooks.
"I probably haven't seen her in 15 years. But I would see him frequently, as other people have said, out walking the dogs. And he was sort of a neighborhood fixture."
"He would frequently walk in the evenings, or even after dark, up the street with his dogs to give them a little walk. And I saw him outside doing a little bit of yard work. He seemed like a nice guy," said Kent Austin, a neighbor.
Deputies with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office say a grandson was living with the couple in the home, but he was not there when they discovered the bodies.
Investigators say they are following several leads.
