UPDATE: Body Found at Appalachian Trail Hiking Shelter Identified

UPDATE: Bedford County Sheriff's investigators have identified the deceased hiker found at the Matts Creek Shelter on Monday morning as 59 year old Rodney Montgomery of Otis Orchard, Washington.

Investigators contacted Montgomery's brother in Washington late Monday who told police that his two brothers were hiking the Appalachain Trail together. Police contacted the remaining hiking brother and discovered he was in Troutville.

He told authorities that he and his brother were hiking to Georgia when his brother became ill. They stopped for a couple of days at the Matts Creek Shelter. On Friday, he left his brother and they agreed to meet in Troutville to cintinue their trip together.

Investigators are still awaiting the results if the autopsy.


Bedford Co., VA - The Bedford County Sheriff's Office is on the scene at a hiking shelter on the Appalachian Trail where they say a man's body was found.

The Sheriff's Office says a hiker found a man dead in at the Matts Creek Shelter around 9:20 a.m. Monday. The medical examiner is on the scene, but at this point the sheriff's office says it appears he died of natural causes, and they are not suspecting foul play. Deputies say other hikers talked to the man late Sunday and he had told them "he wasn't having a good day."
