Lynchburg, VA - Crews are just days away from the start of work on the final phases of the Bluff Walk project in downtown Lynchburg.
The $6 million contract has been awarded to Coleman Adams construction. They'll break ground soon, and about two years from today, there will be people walking on a brand new Bluff Walk.
The owner of the Ploughcroft Tea Room, Patricia Hutto, will gladly tell you this location on Commerce Street is just her cup of tea.
"Downtown Lynchburg was the only option to me."
Her business is just a hop, skip, and jump up a hill, 12th Street to be exact, from Lynchburg's future Bluff Walk. It's the talk of downtown.
"Down on Jefferson Street. They're renovating it all."
Construction begins next week on the final phases 2 and 3.
"Once those sections are completed, you'll be able to walk along the entire section of the lower Bluff Walk," said Charles Grant.
Grant is the city's construction manager.
"It's just been very meaningful to be involved with it for 12 years. I've seen a lot of this work, come to where it's actually beginning to pay off now. Where developers are coming in to these buildings and remodeling, where housing and commercial spaces will be here. It's very fulfilling," said Grant.
Hutto believes when it's all done in two years, her cup will run over with customers.
"When Bluff Walk opens, I think I'm going to get a lot of walking traffic," she said. "This can only be marvelous for us in Downtown Lynchburg."
The city hopes to open phase 1, steps and a ramp at 11th street in the next couple months. They may have to limit access at times during construction of the next phases for safety but want to keep it open as much as possible.
