Bedford, VA - Bedford won't be getting an Amtrak stop when service is extended from Lynchburg to Roanoke.
The Department of Rail and Public Transpiration says there's not enough distance between the Lynchburg station and the one being added in Roanoke by 2017 to justify a Bedford stop.
The department says adding a stop in Bedford could cause late departures, the projected ridership is too low, and the cost of track and station improvements is too high.
"They have their criteria. At this point, we don't fit it to get the stop," said Charles Kolakowski, Bedford Town Manager. "We do appreciate the fairness of it. We're disappointed, but not discouraged."
A bus running from Roanoke stops at the Bedford Welcome Center daily to bring passengers to the Lynchburg Amtrak station. The town manager does not know if that service will continue when the Roanoke station opens.
