Bedford Police Chief Back at Work After Bike Crash
Bedford, VA - Bedford's Police Chief is back at work, but not back on his bike after being hit by a car while riding earlier this month.
Chief Jim Day says he gave a left turn signal on Route 43 on April 6. State Police say a car tried to pass Day as he turned, and hit him. Day ended up on the hood of the car and then the ground.
Day hopes this is a reminder to both cyclists and drivers to share the road.
"Just be aware of each other. Obey the traffic laws. Know what the traffic laws are. Know what the signals are," said Day. "Cyclists, use the proper signals. Drivers, give them some courtesy."
State Police charged the car's driver, Patricia Robertson, with improper passing. Day was wearing his helmet.
Chief Day hopes to be back on his bike in time for the city's 'Ride with the Chief' event May 17. The event starts at 1p.m. at Bedford City Hall. If you'd like to join the chief on the ride, be sure to bring your helmet.
