Bedford Co. Schools to Save Millions in Energy Costs

Bedford Co.,VA- The Bedford County school system has signed a deal to put in $8 million worth of energy upgrades, and leaders say the whole package will pay for itself.

Staunton River High School received the first upgrade. Crews are working to replace the school's old boiler system with a more efficient one. The company NORESCO hopes to finish it by next month.

In the future, school officials hope the deal with NORESCO will free up money for other things.

"We have a lot of projects that need to be done so we can really streamline and focus in those going forward rather than diverting money to these types of projects," said Randy Hagler, chief financial officer for the Bedford County Public Schools.

Over the next 15 years, school officials say every school will receive green updates. Next, NORESCO will work on new lighting at Otter River Elementary School. The school system says county supervisors were instrumental in getting this deal.
