Bedford County Announces Teacher of the Year

Bedford Co., VA- Bedford County has a new teacher of the year. The school system announced the honor Tuesday night at the Boonsboro Country Club.

The three finalists for the award each received several gifts, including a $1,000 chair donated by Sam Moore Furniture in Bedford. And the winner, Thaxton Elementary School fourth grade teacher Kathy Barton, got a big shiny trophy as well. She says she was shocked at getting the award, but glad her hard work is paying off.

"I just love working with the children and making sure that they're inspired to be able to have a better chance in life. You know, education is what has been a great way for me to have a good life and I want them to do the same thing," said Barton.

The other finalists for teacher of the year were Wendy Singleton of Jefferson Forest High School and Kelly Brown of Liberty High School.
