Bedford Co. Sheriff Wants Officers in Every School

Bedford Co., VA - Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown wants a school resource officer in every elementary school next fall.

There are already officers in the county's middle and high schools. The sheriff's request would create 15 new resource officer positions.

Brown has asked the Board of Supervisors to include around $800,000 in the county's budget for the officers.

"It's sad that it comes down to dollars and cents when it comes to our innocents, with these elementary school kids, but I know it does," said Brown.

The Bedford Police Department currently staffs a resource officer at Bedford Middle School. The sheriff's office will take over that responsibility this fall, after the city becomes a town. That position is already included in next year's county budget.

The Board of Supervisors will adopt a budget next month.
