Bedford Co. Landmark Targeted By Thieves

Bedford Co., VA - A historic Bedford County landmark is the target of thieves, according to the sheriff's office.

A trailer with an event tent inside was reported stolen from outside the Big Otter Mill. The non-profit organization Friends of the Big Otter Mill has been working to restore the mill. Board members believe the trailer was stolen between Thursday night and Friday morning. They noticed the trailer was missing Friday and the lock on the hitch had been cut.

"They stole from us, but they really stole from the community," said Becky Wuergler, President of Friends of the Big Otter Mill. "This was money that people had generously given us to make this mill run again. They stole from the whole community."

The trailer is 24'x8', white, enclosed, with a Trailmaster decal on the side. The license plate number is "506116TL".

If you know anything about the theft, call the Bedford County Sheriff's Office at (540) 586-4800.

The board was in the process of having the trailer insured. The trailer and tent were both purchased used, at a cost of $7,000.

The replacement cost would be double if they have to buy brand new ones.
