South Boston, VA - A 200-pound black bear captured in South Boston is at the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro.
South Boston, VA- A 200-pound black bear was spotted running through South Boston Tuesday night. The male bear ended up in a tree at Halifax County Middle School. A neighbor spotted the bear in their yard before that.
South Boston Police, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, animal control, and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries were on the scene. Once they tranquilized the bear, and he fell asleep, they put him in a cage.
"This is the first time throughout the whole summer that we've had to respond to a bear in town. Most of the time, they can kind of evade and then travel through an area and get back into their normal territories,"said Biologist Dan Lovelace.
Biologist Dan Lovelace said the bear is being brought back to Lynchburg. They will decide Wednesday if the bear can be released back into the wild.
