Averett University Athletes Host Fall Fun Day with Danville Special Olympians

Danville, VA--More than 350 Averett University athletes spent part of their afternoon teaching their skills to some special needs children.

It was all part of Averett's Fall Fun Day for more than 150 kids in the Danville Special Olympics program.

The children spent about three hours rotating to different sports stations playing things like soccer, baseball and basketball.

"In the past I've worked with some of these kids and just to see the smiles and hear the laughter and see the engagement that is so difficult sometimes to find with these guys, and they meshed with a lot of the students, that was what was so neat to see," said Jill Hamlin, Director of Autism Studies at Averett University.

Averett University athletics has partnered with the Danville Special Olympics for about four years.

They plan to hold a track and field day in the Spring for Special Olympians.
