Roanoke, VA - Thousands of dollars are helping dozens of animals at Angels of Assisi in Roanoke get an early Christmas gift.
Many in the community have stepped up to ensure their transition to a new home goes as smoothly as possible by pre-paying adoption fees.
For the first time in the shelter's history, adoption fees for every single animal have been waived.
That's perfect for Carrie Workman.
She's been looking for a playmate for her Chihuahua and decided now was the time to get her little buddy a new friend.
"Money is a big issue when it comes to pets," she said. "They are very expensive."
It all began at the beginning of the month when a family covered the fees to adopt more than 60 cats.
That act of generosity caught on which quickly spread to the dogs as well.
"By the time it was said and done every single animal in the shelter had a sponsor," said Lisa O'Neil with Angels of Assisi.
A move that ignited an adoption craze that is only gaining momentum.
"Almost like little gift tags that people started putting on cages," she said. " And then we had a place on our website where people could sponsor an animal online and they just kept rolling in and rolling in and rolling in. And we're like, "You know what? We are down to three dogs who don't have a sponsor." And then they were sponsored. So it's really been a tremendous outpouring from the community."
Angels of Assisi is hosting a very special Christmas morning event called, "Breakfast With the Angels" from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Christmas morning. So if you are looking for a little Christmas companionship grab your dog, or your cat, and come into downtown Roanoke to meet the staff and make some new furry friends as well.
