Amherst Co. Woman's Unborn Baby Suffers from Rare Birth Defect
Amherst Co., VA - 23 year old Caitlin Garrett and her fianc began to lose hope after trying to get pregnant for a year and a half. However, this December, they got the news that she was expecting her first child. "We went for the ultrasound to find out what the sex of the baby was. We were excited that it was a boy, but then she said we have some bad news" said Garrett.Garrett's doctor told her that her son Averee suffers from Gastroschisis, an uncommon birth defect that has caused his internal organs to grow outside of his stomach."At that point in time, I didn't hear anything else all I heard was birth defect and she said he does have a chance of dying After that I was in tears, crying my eyes out. I was thinking wow my first pregnancy and my baby could die"Doctors have to deliver Averee by C-section at UVA Medical Center once Garrett is around 7 months pregnant.Garrett says they expect he will be around 3 pounds when he is delivered and will drop down to 2 pounds once the surgery is complete. "That's my biggest scare that he will come out but he's not going to make it" said Garrett.Doctors expect Averee's recovery to take anywhere from 2 to 4 months. She plans to quit her job and take time off school to stay at UVA with Averee. On June 21, a bike run fundraiser will be held to raise money for Averee's medical expenses.
