Amherst Co. Issues Multiple Indictments as Part of Long Term Drug Investigation

Amherst Co., VA - The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is wrapping up a long term undercover narcotics investigation Thursday with multiple area arrests. Operation Summer Camp had been in progress since December 2013, with investigators targeting area drug dealers and distributors. On June 10th, the Grand Jury of Amherst County issued a number of indictments. Those indictments along with other recent arrests number 68 people and 192 charges. More suspects are selecting areas to make their deals that fall within 1,000 feet of a school, and according to officials, this enhances the offense with an additional felony charge. As a part of this operation, four vehicles have been seized at an estimated value of $90,000.{} $5,000 cash and seven weapons were also seized.Those suspects arrested Thursday are being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, Amherst Adult Detention Center where they are having bond hearings before a Magistrate. Some of those listed were already charged, but are a part of this operation and are already in the court system. As these cases make their way to court, the suspects will have an advisement hearing in Amherst Circuit Court and will have a trial date set.
