Amherst 5K Supports IRON Man Program

Amherst, VA - Amherst is gearing up for a 5K this Sunday, and it's all to benefit the Iron Man program.

Iron Man works with young men in Amherst to develop leadership skills. IRON stands for I'm Responsible for Overcoming Negativity.

The 5k April 21 starts at 2:30 p.m. at Amherst High School. Money raised will go into college scholarships for the program.

For Iron Man's founder and executive director, the program's all about taking our youth from good to great.

"I really got discouraged about the amount of young men in the school, and young women, who had a lot of talent, but just didn't have a way to express themselves, and were making bad choices, and wasting talent and wasting opportunity," said Derrick Brown.

Online registration for the 5K closes Friday at 4 p.m. For details or to sign up, click here.

Runners are encouraged to wear something blue to honor the victims in the Boston marathon. The race will start with a moment of silence.
