Altavista Girls 4th Quarter Rally Falls Short in Title Game

Team Warming Up

RICHMOND - Altavista's fourth quarter surge came up short in the VHSL Girls Division 1 state championship game. The Colonels trailed by ten going to the final period but lost to East Rockingham 35-31.

Sydney Morris scored nine points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Takara Dews also scored nine points for the Colonels.

With a number of Altavista's usual outside shooters on the bench after fouling out, Morris was forced to take an abnormal mid-range jump shot with six seconds left in the game. Down by two points, the shot hit off the side of the backboard. East Rock got the rebound and then made two free throws to ice the game.

"Obviously we would have like to get her going to the basket but by that time we were out of shooters. We thought she had a three in her. She made one prior to this in practice. We were hoping for one today but didn't get it," coach Debbie Spencer said.

It took six-plus minutes for Altavista to score its first points in the game. The Colonels rallied to take the lead in the second quarter before trailing 21-13 at halftime.

Altavista finished the season 23-5. East Rock finished 29-1.
