Altavista Falls to Auburn in Group 1A Volleyball State Final

Richmond - For the second straight year, defending state champion Auburn ended Altavista's volleyball season. Last year it was in the state SEMIFINALS. Saturday it came in the state TITLE match.

Auburn took command early in the match, winning the first two games 25-17 and 25-18 to grab a 2-0 games lead. The Colonels, who brought an 18-game winning streak into the final, tried to rally but Auburn wouldn't let Altavista back in the match. The Eagles played aggressor from the outset, forcing Altavista to play more of a defensive game, something the Colonels haven't had to do this season.
Senior Sydney Morris led Altavista with 9 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces, Victoria Burgess had 20 assists but Altavista was unable to hang with the Eagles. Brooke Bostwick led Auburn with 14 kills, 16 digs and 5 blocks, Corey Altizer had 32 assists.
Auburn wins its second straight state championship and finishes the season 28-and-2. Altavista winds up a great year at 22-and-3.
Debra Spencer, ALTAVISTA HEAD COACH, said "It felt like we spent all night playing defense and we just couldn't muster enough offense to sustain rallies of points."
Sydney Morris, 9 KILLS, 10 DIGS, 2 ACES FOR COLONELS, said "I wouldn't have wanted to go to any other high school and play under any other coaching staff. Coach Spencer and Coach Short, they're always there for you, they always hold it together and they always know what to do."
Debra Spencer said "Today didn't turn out the way we wanted, but we've improved greatly throughout the year. And it, you know, just wasn't our day."
