Pittsylvania Co., VA - Witnesses say a fifth grade Pittsylvania County boy got very serious injuries in a fight at his school, Twin Springs Elementary this week.Damian Bowen suffered from a bi-lateral nose fracture, a cheek bone fracture, a possible concussion, and will have to undergo surgery. Damian's mother could not go on camera but she's heartbroken by her son's condition.
Within just a couple of days, the Facebook page 'Justice For Damian' snowballed into a community-wide conversation. Its purpose is to bring awareness to what happened to 11-year-old Damian Bowen.
"There's 15,000 different stories," said Lorie Rivero, friend of the family.
Rivero says she can only tell the version she heard from her son who is in Damian's class. She says he told her Damian and another fifth grader exchanged words.
"[Then] Damian was hit, fell back, hit a desk, then something about a bookcase falling on Damian," said Rivero.
Rivero says the student continued to attack Damian right inside his classroom. Rivero says they had a substitute teacher that day. According to the Facebook page, that teacher was standing in the classroom doorway, speaking to another staff member, and didn't see the alleged attack.
"I'm worried for Damian, I'm worried for my son, I'm worried for the whole school," said Rivero.
Pittsylvania County Schools Superintendent James McDaniel can't talk about the school's side of the story because of confidentiality codes. But he assures us they've been investigating.
"We have to look at the overall situation, which we are doing, and respond accordingly," said McDaniel.
McDaniel says he feels for the injured student.
"I'm disappointed that would happen and I am obviously concerned about the student that was injured," said McDaniel.
"He just said 'Mom, Damian looks bad. He looks scary,'" said Rivero.
The Facebook page indicates the other student has been suspended for 10 days. McDaniel would not comment on any specifics. Damian will be out of school for much longer, as he recovers.
