Danville, VA -- You could win a big pile of cash and help local businesses. The Downtown Danville Association will host a scavenger hunt Thursday. The rules are simple and it could mean $500 in your pocket. If you are at the downtown fountain at 5:30 on Thursday, you can pick up a flyer. This scavenger hunt won't just benefit the community, but local businesses say it may make a big difference for them too. This Thursday, shoppers will be on a mission, not just to get a good deal, but to earn a raffle ticket. That's because in celebration of Business Appreciation Week in Danville and Pittsylvania County, organizers hope to draw crowds to the River District through a scavenger hunt."They'll get a game card, they will visit downtown merchants where they have to find an item and when they do, they'll get their card stamped," said Laurie Moran, President of Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. Stamp all of the clues in time and get a raffle ticket. But, there's more! For every ten dollars you spend with a participating merchant, you get another ticket. Which is something, you can imagine, excites local businesses."If it gets new people inside the door, that will be a big plus. If they buy something, that will be a nice addition too," said Ben Rippe, Owner of Rippe's. Rippe says Thursdays typically aren't his busiest night. But this week, he'll have extra employees working, in hopes he'll get extra business."It's certainly great exposure to our enhanced River District," said Rippe. Stores like Commonwealth Silver and Goldsmiths will even extend their hours for the event."It's going to bring people downtown that may or may not visit," said Leilani Cochran, Operations Manager of Commonwealth Silver and Goldsmiths. Then, at 7:30 back at the fountain they'll have a drawing where one lucky winner will get the $500 cash prize.Business Appreciation Week also includes a golf tournament and workshops. Organizers hope this scavenger hunt is such a success that it can become a tradition in the River District.
